Fowler by the Numbers

Over the summer, in my Digital Humanities 101 class, I worked on a group research project analyzing the artworks of 18 of the largest American art museums, such as LACMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more. The data and its cooresponding story was . . . underwhelming.

87% of all represented artists were men, and 85% were white. Across the board, museums disproportionately excluded the artworks of women and people of color.

Right after finishing this project, I was left wondering, what about the Fowler Museum? Located snuggly on the UCLA campus, "the Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Indigenous Americas." What does their data highlight?

The following project is an analysis of the Fowler's digital colleciton.
